MORRISVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — Multiple lanes are closed after a tractor-trailer caught on fire Tuesday afternoon on a Wake County highway.

An alert from the North Carolina Department of Transportation notified drivers of multiple lanes closing around 3:20 p.m. due to a vehicle fire on Interstate 40 east near the Aviation Parkway exit.
Surveillance video from NCDOT showed flames and heavy black smoke shooting from the back of the vehicle.

Major congestion was seen on NCDOT cameras along I-40 east as the semi fire was being put out.

I-40 East lanes closed after semi catches on fire: NCDOT
The Morrisville Fire Department confirmed with CBS 17 that they responded with three engines to put out the fire, along with the Cary Fire Department and Wake County.
The fire was extinguished, according to Morrisville officials, around 4 p.m. and the cause has yet to be reported.
In addition to two lanes, NCDOT said the ramp to Aviation Parkway is closed on I-40 east. NCDOT estimates the vehicle fire will be cleared around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
