Friday will bring another round of dangerous heat to parts of central North Carolina, with a Heat Advisory in effect for areas where heat index values could reach as high as 109° during the afternoon. Temperatures will climb into the mid-90s, and high humidity will make it feel even hotter.

If you plan to spend an extended amount of time outdoors, take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning, drink plenty of water, and avoid strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day. A brief break from the worst of the heat arrives Saturday as a boundary moves through and changes our wind direction, allowing temperatures to ease slightly.
Rain chances will be higher this weekend compared to what we’ve seen over the past week, although widespread rainfall is still not expected. A weak front will move into the region on Friday and stall through the weekend and into early next week.
With plenty of heat and moisture available, any storm that develops could become strong to severe. The primary threats will be damaging wind gusts and locally heavy rainfall, with a Marginal Risk, or Level 1 out of 5, for severe storms in place this afternoon. Most locations will remain dry, but storms could produce very heavy rain in a short period of time.
Hot weather returns to start next week, with temperatures once again climbing into the mid to upper 90s. By the middle of next week, we could see a subtle shift in the overall weather pattern that would bring temperatures back toward the lower 90s and provide at least some relief from the prolonged heat.
We’re also keeping a close eye on the tropics as activity increases across the Atlantic, but there is currently no tropical threat to North Carolina or the mainland United States over the next week. We’ll continue to monitor the tropics closely as we move deeper into hurricane season.
