RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — It is move-in weekend for students at North Carolina State University, which will welcome one if its largest classes yet.

Friday was busy with thousands of students settling in before the start of the school year. The Weist family unpacked their van after arriving from Burlington.
“Just a lot of sweating this morning because it was very humid packing in the car,” said Justin Weist, who was sending off his fourth and last child off to college.
“It’s tough because she’s our only girl,” Weist said. “It’s kind of hard for me and mom over there but it’s a good experience. We’re proud of her. And she went to early college, so she’s starting as a junior at 18.”
According to Weist, his daughter packed a lot more than his three sons, but on the bright side, she’s saving him money being so far ahead.
About 61,000 students are enrolled at NC State this year, representing all but two North Carolina’s counties, 48 states, and 100 countries.
“I’m excited when I look around this campus and see the families and the students that’ll come,” Chancellor Kevin Howell said. “It’s one of the best times to be on a college campus in the nation, but more so here.”

Howell took the time to greet students and families on move-in day. He remembers leaving his small town of Shelby to go off to college.
“Those students leave rural North Carolina,” he said. “They leave their homes for maybe the first time, but the success that they have in the university, they go back to those community and they change not only their families by encouraging others to pursue higher education, they change their communities.”
As students start a new chapter their life, the chancellor wants families to know they’re safe, in good hands and getting a world class education.

Howell is also sending a message to students to pick up the phone when their loved ones call. It’s a suggestion families like the Weists likely appreciate.
“It was emotional,” Weist said. “I’m going to miss her.”
The chancellor is encouraging students to get involved on campus so they have community away from home and to keep up the habits that got them to college.
