CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) — After an extended break, the double murder trial of Issiah Ross resumed Tuesday in Orange County court.

The trial was put on recess moments after it began Friday morning due to a medical emergency in defense attorney Jonathan Trapp’s family.
Issiah Ross, now 21, is accused of shooting and killing Lyric Woods, 14, and Devin Clark, 18, in September 2022. On the first day of testimony, the jury heard from the ATV drivers who discovered the teens’ bodies, as well as emotional recollections from Lyric’s mother and Devin’s father.

After the holiday weekend and extension, two expert witnesses took the stand on Tuesday morning. Also taking the stand was a key witness for the prosecution, who revealed that Ross confessed to killing the two teens. An FBI agent took the stand before the court adjourned for the day.
The trial will resume Wednesday morning at 9:30 a.m.
What was revealed today: Snapchat messages, video surveillance
Margaret Le Senechal, an NC State Crime Lab Firearms Examiner, started by describing her work looking into the shell casings, bullet fragments and other projectiles found at the scene. No firearm was recovered at the scene of the crime, and without the firearm, she said it cannot be proven whether the bullets originated from the same gun or a different firearm by the same manufacturer.
A very graphic testimony followed Le Senechal, this one from Sgt. Devin Goodwin, who is an Orange County criminal investigator. Goodwin said he arrived on scene after initial response from deputies, and noticed that Lyric and Devin may have been placed at the scene, and Devin’s pants were pulled down with his boxer briefs showing.

Goodwin then read through Snapchat messages from Lyric and Devin about a sexual encounter, as well as chats from other users and Devin, saying Lyric would perform sexual acts if they came to pick her up. It was not determined if any of the users was Ross, according to testimony from experts.
Just before the trial broke for lunch, video surveillance was shown in the courtroom of Ross in his mother’s white GMC Sierra at a gas station in Mebane. Both the prosecution and the defense questioned Goodwin about the findings of the video.

Information uncovered at the trial on Thursday included more about the relationship between Ross and Devin; a heated exchange between Ross and his mother; and detailed accounts of the victims’ autopsy results.
The defense said Ross acted in self-defense. According to the defense, Ross and Devin got into a fight and Devin pulled out a weapon. However, Ross gained control of the gun and fired it to fend off Devin.
