WESTERN N.C. (WNCN) — In the span of about 24 hours this weekend, two earthquakes shook western North Carolina in areas near Asheville.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the first one hit around 7:24 a.m. Saturday. It measured at magnitude 2.0 on the Richter scale with an epicenter around seven kilometers or 4.3 miles south southwest of Canton in Haywood County. The earthquake happened at a depth of 6.2 kilometers or 3.8 miles below the earth’s surface, according to USGS data.
The second tremor — also magnitude 2.0 — happened Sunday morning around 7:57 a.m., this time to the northeast of Asheville. Its epicenter measured eight kilometers or 4.9 miles east northeast of Weaverville in Buncombe County, USGS data showed, with a shallower depth of 3.6 kilometers or 2.2 miles.

After this weekend’s tremblors, the total number of earthquakes to strike North Carolina so far in 2026 is now close to 30. The strongest one recorded in the state this year was a magnitude 2.7 quake that hit outside Dillsboro in Jackson County on March 23. That epicenter is less than 40 miles from where Saturday’s earthquake was centered.
