Construction project starting soon on major downtown Raleigh streets

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Traffic cones, detours, and construction workers will soon take over two major streets in downtown Raleigh.

The city is making improvements to Blount Street and Person Street.

Blount and Person Street see thousands of vehicle traffic every day, but traffic will be slowing with Blount Street and Person Street Improvement Project. The goal is to create a complete street that can accommodate people on foot, bike, car, or bus. 

The city is upgrading Blount and Person Streets from Hoke Street to Martin Luther King Jr. Traffic lights are going in at the intersections of Person Street and Bragg Street and Blount Steet and Bragg Streets.

Level boarding buses are replacing older traditional bus stops at several locations along Blount Street and Person Street.

Those are just the short-term projects. In the long-term, the city is looking at converting the intersection of Delway Street/Person Street/Wake Forest Road into a roundabout and transforming Blount Street and Person Street from one-way to two-way streets.

Construction for the immediate project start in October. That portion of the construction project is budgeted at $946,000. The budget for the entire corridor is $9.4 million.
