CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WJZY) \u2014 The Charlotte City Council is rescinding its support for the Interstate 77 expansion project.<\/p>\n

After a lengthy discussion over the heavily debated I-77 South Express lanes project, councilmembers voted 6-5 to pull the city\u2019s approval of the public-private partnership of the project and direct the city\u2019s regional transportation representative to oppose. City Council says they are rescinding their approval until further studies are conducted, outlined in their resolution. <\/p>\n

Initially, the city voted to approve an amended resolution<\/strong> to pause the project until further evaluations of potential impacts to the community were made and to assess possible alternatives. <\/p>\n

The 11-mile-long widening project would stretch from Uptown Charlotte to the South Carolina state line along I-77\u2019s southbound lanes. Residents have expressed concerns that the proposed designs for that portion of the corridor would pose negative impacts on the city\u2019s\u00a0parks and greenways<\/strong>, as well as potential\u00a0displacement of homes and businesses<\/strong>\u00a0in historically Black neighborhoods.<\/p>\n

There are questions about how this resolution would impact the project and the state and federal funding needed. North Carolina officials have said funding for the estimated $3 billion project could be lost if there\u2019s a hold-up in the plan. <\/p>\n
