(WNCN) \u2014 Dr. Matt Harmody has spent his life going to the extremes \u2014 running ultramarathons and working marathon shifts in the emergency department \u2014\u00a0\u00a0but it\u2019s what he could not do that led to one of the most important decisions of his life.<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/raleighmovingnews.com\/?p=1062\">High school graduation season kicks off in Wake County; nearly 12,500 expected to earn diplomas<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Harmody did his residency in the emergency department at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill before spending two decades as an emergency physician in the Sandhills. His son is following in his footsteps, doing his residency in emergency medicine at UNC Health.<\/p>\n<p>But Harmody\u2019s father was not a doctor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was not a big fan of doctors,\u201d Harmody recalled.<\/p>\n<p>Still, it was Harmody\u2019s father who led him to UNC Hospitals in more ways than one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father was such a mentor and an important person in my life,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>When Harmody was in college, he learned his father\u2019s kidneys were failing. He was in complete\u00a0kidney\u00a0failure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harmody, who was studying engineering at the time, didn\u2019t know a lot about\u00a0kidney\u00a0donation, but he knew a transplant from a living donor could help his father get well if his father\u00a0would agree.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did not want to consider a living\u00a0kidney\u00a0donation,\u201d Harmody said. \u201cHe felt he\u2019d lived a full life at age 50, didn\u2019t want to risk someone else\u2019s life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harmody would\u2019ve given a kidney to his father if his father would have accepted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always just saw that as a missed opportunity to really help my father, really save his life,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>While Harmody couldn\u2019t save his father, watching his him battle\u00a0kidney\u00a0disease led him to save lives in a different way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy experience with my father and the medical team that took care of him completely changed what I thought I should be doing,\u201d he said. \u201cIt drove me to pursue going back to school and specifically medical school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harmody\u2019s father passed away before he started working in the emergency department, but he was never far from his mind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery day, I saw a dialysis patient, at least one,\u201d Harmody said. \u201cEach reminded me of my father and what he went through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harmody knew his lifesaving efforts could go even further.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI finally reached a point in time where, though I couldn\u2019t make a difference in my father\u2019s life, I knew I could make a difference in someone else\u2019s,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 20 years after his residency, Harmody found himself back at UNC Hospital, not to learn or to work, but to donate a\u00a0kidney. He had no idea who would receive it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome other people did question why would I do something like that for someone I don\u2019t even know,\u201d he said.<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/raleighmovingnews.com\/?p=1060\">Major fire near Louisburg Road badly damages house in Raleigh neighborhood<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Alex Toledo, the surgical director for\u00a0kidney\u00a0transplants at UNC Hospital said, \u201cHe didn\u2019t know where that kidney was going, but was still willing to do it and very committed to doing that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Toledo and transplant nephrologist Dr. Eddie Fuller\u00a0explained living donors offer a lot of advantages to transplant patients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiving\u00a0kidneys work better and last longer than\u00a0kidneys do from a deceased donor,\u201d Fuller said. \u201cMost importantly, you can get them sooner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before surgery, a potential donor must go through extensive testing to make sure they\u2019re healthy and mentally prepared to donate. While recovery takes time, most donors are back to their normal lives within weeks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs long as they\u2019re staying hydrated and going to their checkups, there really are very few limitations,\u201d Toledo said. \u201cMatt\u2019s been proof of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harmody, an endurance athlete, didn\u2019t slow down for long. In fact, he\u2019s climbed mountains, along with other living donors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe most significant was Mount Kilimanjaro,\u201d he said. \u201cWe summited on World\u00a0Kidney\u00a0Day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not stopping there, Harmody joined several other living kidney donors in setting a Guinness World Record for summitting the highest point in all 50 states in the shortest amount of time.<\/p>\n<p>Harmody wrote a book about the adventure called\u00a0\u201cAscending America\u201d.\u00a0It isn\u2019t his accomplishments he hopes to highlight, but rather the opportunity to help someone else.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to be a physician, you don\u2019t have to be an endurance athlete,\u201d he said. \u201cYou can be an ordinary person, do something extraordinary, and save someone\u2019s life by being a living\u00a0kidney\u00a0donor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although Harmody hasn\u2019t met the person who received his\u00a0kidney, he cherishes a note she wrote to him and took it with him to Mount Kilimanjaro.<\/p>\n<p>Harmody\u2019s\u00a0lifesaving work continues, even after retiring from emergency medicine. He\u2019s the board chair for the National Kidney\u00a0Donation Organization, where mentors potential donors and shares his experience every chance he gets. He always talks about his dad.<\/p>\n<p>While Harmody\u2019s father was never a big fan of hospitals, he led his son to become a doctor, to save a stranger, and to encourage others considering donation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Looking for more positive news in your day?
