RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN<\/u>) \u2014 The last of the preseason hurricane forecasts\u00a0has come in ahead of this year\u2019s season. Most of the forecasts are for a near-average season, with only one forecasting an above-average season.<\/p>\n

NOAA said there\u2019s a 55% chance of a below-average season, a 35% chance of a near-average season, and a 10% chance of an above-average season. Overall, they are going with numbers slightly below the average, calling for 8-14 named storms, including 3-6 hurricanes and 1-3 major hurricanes.<\/p>\n

The common theme with the forecast is the development of a strong or very strong El Ni\u00f1o. This will increase shear across the Atlantic and reduce the number of storms that form. <\/p>\n

The best chance for a storm to form might come in the early season close to the U.S. off existing boundaries. Cold fronts in the early season (June\/July), as well as the late season (September\/October), are places that storms can form. <\/p>\n

This year, we will likely see a pattern that favors the subtropics vs. the main development region in the Atlantic. This often results in storms that stay out over the Atlantic vs. threatening the U.S. mainland. \u00a0<\/p>\n
