{"id":1238,"date":"2026-05-23T21:36:35","date_gmt":"2026-05-23T21:36:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/raleighmovingnews.com\/?p=1238"},"modified":"2026-05-23T21:36:35","modified_gmt":"2026-05-23T21:36:35","slug":"russell-clashes-with-mercedes-teammate-antonelli-in-canadian-gp-sprint-win","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/raleighmovingnews.com\/?p=1238","title":{"rendered":"Russell clashes with Mercedes teammate Antonelli in Canadian GP sprint win"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>MONTREAL (AP) \u2014 George Russell clashed early with Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli in the Canadian Grand Prix sprint race Saturday, sending the teen star into the grass in an entertaining victory from the pole.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/raleighmovingnews.com\/?p=1236\">Groups of protesters clash with police after anti-government rally in Belgrade<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Russell \u2014 the Grand Prix winner last year at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve \u2014 fended off a pair of attacks from Antonelli on the sixth of 23 laps as the drivers made contact in Turn 1, forcing the 19-year-old Italian into the grass.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was very naughty,\u201d a furious Antonelli said in one of several complaints as emotions boiled over on the team radio.<\/p>\n<p>Antonelli \u2014 the winner of the last three Grand Prix races \u2014 accused Russell of pushing him off before demanding a penalty.<\/p>\n<p>Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff told Antonelli to \u201cconcentrate on the driving, please, not on the radio moaning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to recheck. Emotions were very high in the moment, and obviously I was very annoyed,\u201d Antonelli said in an ensuing press conference, moments after a frosty finish-line handshake with Russell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just need a bit of clarity and then once it\u2019s clear, then it\u2019s all going to be fine. The main thing for the team is that there\u2019s no contact, that we don\u2019t pressure each other, which today at the end was very close.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>From Russell\u2019s point of view, he\u2019d done nothing wrong, chalking up the fireworks simply to hard racing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t investigated, so I guess the race directors and stewards thought the same,\u201d said the 28-year-old English driver, sitting next to Antonelli. \u201cAs kids in karting, we know that overtaking on the outside, there\u2019s a certain element of risk that comes with that. Respect to him for giving it a go. Emotions are always high for all of us in the cockpit, but I\u2019m sure we\u2019ll both talk about it after.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Antonelli rolled off course again on a second attempt a few corners later, losing his place to McLaren\u2019s Lando Norris in the process.<\/p>\n<p>Norris, the reigning F1 world champion, challenged Russell the rest of the race and held on to second as Antonelli veered off track a third time in an overtake attempt on the last lap.<\/p>\n<p>Antonelli finished third, as Russell cut his championship lead to 18 points heading into qualifying later Saturday for the Grand Prix race Sunday. Russell also won a sprint race in China this season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is clear that between teammates we race hard and fair and no contact, and that\u2019s always the objective,\u201d Russell said. \u201cI wasn\u2019t racing Kimi any harder than I would have raced Lando in the same position. We\u2019re both here fighting to win, and as always in the past, even last year when we battled, I always gave Kimi a bit more room compared to anyone else. It wasn\u2019t even investigated, so I think that says enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>F1 introduced sprints in 2021. The shortened races cover roughly 60 miles (100 kilometers), about one-third the distance of a Grand Prix, for a maximum of eight points.
