CREEDMOOR, N.C. (WNCN) \u2014 A Granville County church was surrounded by a bomb squad and a hazmat team Saturday after a report of a suspicious package, the sheriff\u2019s office said.<\/p>\n

The incident was reported at Rock Spring Missionary Baptist Church at 3180 Bruce Garner Road, about five miles southeast of Creedmoor, according to a Saturday afternoon Granville County Sheriff\u2019s Office news release.<\/p>\n

Church staffers told authorities that someone left a package on the front porch of the church, the news release said.<\/p>\n

Church workers took the package inside the church before law enforcement arrived, officials said.<\/p>\n

Granville County fire agencies and deputies initially responded to \u201cassess the situation and ensure the safety of church staff and the surrounding community,\u201d Granville County Sheriff Robert Fountain said.<\/p>\n

Soon, other agencies were sent to the scene.<\/p>\n

\u201cSpecialized personnel examined the package and conducted a thorough assessment. The investigation determined that the item did not pose an explosive, chemical, or biological threat,\u201d Fountain said.<\/p>\n

The investigation included the North Carolina SBI Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit, North Carolina Emergency Management and the Raleigh Fire Department Hazardous Materials Response Team.<\/p>\n

Officials said the placement of the package is still under investigation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe sheriff\u2019s office appreciates the cooperation of church staff and the coordinated response of all participating agencies,\u201d Fountain said.<\/p>\n
