WILSON, N.C. (WNCN) \u2014 A Wilson County teenager was\u00a0honored for saving his brother\u2019s life using a skill he learned in school, which he didn\u2019t realize he would need so soon.<\/p>\n

Duck hunting is a family affair for 14-year-old Cody and his brother, 20-year-old Hunter Aliff. A typical outing with their father in January turned into a medical emergency when Hunter was found unconscious.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were hunting, and I heard a splash,\u201d Cody said. \u201cI called for [Hunter\u2019s] name, and he didn\u2019t answer. So, I ran all the way over there, and he was face down in the water.\u201d<\/p>\n

He knew he had to do something quick. Cody learned hands-on CPR in his health class months earlier and put those skills to work. It helped keep his brother alive until professional help arrived. Hunter was eventually taken to the hospital, where he recovered surrounded by his family.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cJust feels great because I didn\u2019t know I was going to use all that stuff so soon,\u201d Cody said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The American Heart Association awarded Cody with the Heartsaver Hero Award. The award recognizes heroes who step in to help save a life during an emergency. Immediate CPR can double or even triple a person\u2019s chance of survival in cardiac emergencies.<\/p>\n

Cody\u2019s mother is proud of his quick action.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe is a very good student,\u201d Barbie Aliff said. \u201cHe really does pay attention for the most part in school, and so this paid off because he was paying attention.\u201d<\/p>\n

Barbie is a nurse with years of experience using the skill herself.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have performed CPR several times, and it\u2019s not easy,\u201d Barbie said. \u201cSo, for a 14-year-old to pull his brother out of the water and perform, that was such a blessing. And I think, like he said,\u00a0with all God\u2019s strength and preparedness, that\u2019s what made it happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

CPR training is a graduation requirement for North Carolina public high schools. Cody hopes other students will pay attention when it\u2019s their turn to learn.<\/p>\n

Cody and his mother are now hosting CPR classes to raise awareness of this valuable skill.<\/p>\n
