STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. (AP\/WNCN) \u2014 A family of four from Massachusetts who were killed on Friday when a bus crashed into multiple vehicles in Virginia were traveling to a wedding with a carload of homemade desserts for the celebration.<\/p>

The family wedding will go forward on Sunday in South Carolina, but it also will be a time to mourn the loss of Dmitri and Ecaterina Doncev and their two children, Emily and Mark, a relative said Saturday.<\/p>\n

\u201cA son, a father \u2014 the whole family \u2014 everyone that has been dear to us,\u201d Carolina Bublik said.<\/p>\n

The Doncevs were killed when a motorcoach caused a chain-reaction crash with vehicles that slowed traffic for a work zone on Interstate 95 in Stafford County around 2:35 a.m. Friday, authorities said.<\/p>\n

The bus struck a Suburban, which then hit an Acura carrying the Doncev family, police said. Priscilla Mafalda, 25, of Worcester, Massachusetts, was in the Chevrolet SUV and also died. <\/p>\n

In total, officials said 44 people were hospitalized, three of whom had critical injuries. <\/p>\n

Mary Washington Healthcare said that as of 3 p.m. Saturday, 15 of the 19 patients receiving care across both of the system\u2019s hospitals have been released. Of the four patients remaining, officials said one remains in critical condition, two are in \u201cserious condition,\u201d and one is in \u201cfair condition.\u201d<\/p>\n

The bus driver, Jing S. Dong, 48, of Staten Island, New York, was charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter, and additional charges were likely, Virginia State Police said. The prosecutor\u2019s office in Stafford County said Dong was arrested and would be in custody while he is treated for his injuries at a hospital.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors said in a statement that Dong\u2019s first court appearance will not be scheduled until he is discharged but a magistrate approved holding him without bond until that time. It also said prosecutors saw enough probable cause to believe Dong was \u201cdriving in a criminally negligent manner.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was unclear whether Dong has an attorney who could speak on his behalf. The case did not yet appear in the state\u2019s online court records, and a call to the area\u2019s public defender went unanswered at a closed office Saturday. <\/p>

The charter bus was traveling from New York to Charlotte, N.C., police said. Medics transported all passengers on board to area hospitals.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash, a months-long task separate from the work of state police. NTSB board member Tom Chapman revealed few new details but said the bus was moving at a high rate of speed.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt seems fairly clear that if there was any braking there wasn\u2019t much, because of the speed and severity of the collision,\u201d Chapman said.<\/p>\n

The bus was operated by E&P Travel Inc., based in Kings Mountain, North Carolina.<\/p>\n

Chapman said the driver\u2019s language proficiency would be part of the NTSB investigation. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, citing police, said on social media that Dong, a native of China, does not speak English.<\/p>\n

Dmitri Doncev, 45, was a nurse who worked at Holyoke Medical Center. Ecaterina Doncev, 44, was a hairstylist who spent days making desserts for the family wedding, Bublik said.<\/p>\n

They emigrated to the U.S. from Moldova in 2008 and settled in Greenfield, Massachusetts, she said.<\/p>\n

Dmitri and his brother Iuri tried to stay together while traveling in separate vehicles to South Carolina.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt some point they ended up getting separated,\u201d Bublik said. \u201cDmitri said, \u2018You go ahead. I\u2019ll catch up later.\u2019 It was a big shock when Iuri arrived at the house. Dmitri should have arrived around the same time. When his car did not show up, and he wasn\u2019t picking up the phone \u2014 that\u2019s when the family started panicking.\u201d <\/p>
