SHELBY, N.C. (WJZY) \u2014 A former Shelby police officer was charged with assault on Monday for a violent arrest caught on camera.<\/p>

Karson Hyder is seen in a Ring doorbell video<\/strong> hitting a woman named Cherrie Moore repeatedly during an arrest last Friday.<\/p>\n

Hyder was fired on Saturday and is now criminally charged with misdemeanor assault, inflicting serious injury.<\/p>\n

Court records say he grabbed Moore by the arm, \u201cpushing her to the ground and striking her in the face with a closed fist,\u201d causing a \u201cpossible broken nose and busted lip.\u201d<\/p>\n

Moore\u2019s father, Gregory, told Queen City News he doesn\u2019t feel the charge equals justice. He believes it should be more severe than a misdemeanor.<\/p>\n

Bishop Marcus Strong of Destiny Life Center in Shelby says he\u2019s happy the charge was brought and with how quickly things have moved since the incident.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe good thing about the arrest, the good thing about the Ring camera, is that this one case is the opportunity to expose as much of this is going on that\u2019s not being recorded, that\u2019s not being seen,\u201d Strong said.<\/p>

The encounter stemmed from Moore allegedly breaking into a house and running from Hyder.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s charged with misdemeanor breaking and entering.<\/p>\n

Two other misdemeanor charges against Moore, resisting an officer and assaulting a government employee, were dismissed Monday.<\/p>\n

Strong says what has to come next is rebuilding trust between the community and the police.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to ensure the community that our police officers in this area are getting the proper training\u2026that they have the proper instruments on them so that if they do have some misconduct it\u2019s recorded,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Moore\u2019s family has retained national civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who says they intend to fight for justice.<\/p>\n
