(QUEEN CITY NEWS) \u2014 Fire crews worked to contain a major gas line rupture and fire in Matthews on Wednesday that damaged at least two homes.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/raleighmovingnews.com\/?p=304\">UNC marks 100th football season at Kenan Stadium with upgrades, special events<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The incident, which began around 11:55 a.m, was centered near Morningwood Drive and Pleasant Plains Road, where authorities closed roads and urged drivers to avoid the area.<\/p>\n<p>According to Matthews Fire &amp; EMS, the fire involved an 8-inch natural gas pipe.<\/p>\n<p>Officials said Piedmont Natural Gas crews worked to shut off the flow by attempting to \u201cpinch the pipe\u201d as firefighters remained at the scene battling the blaze.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 50 homes along Morningwood lost power when it was shut off, but it was restored on Wednesday evening.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/raleighmovingnews.com\/?p=295\">WNBA guard cut from Dream while \u2018getting on the bus\u2019 to first game signs with new team<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Large emergency response<\/h2>\n<p>At least 100 firefighters responded to the incident. Crews from Matthews Fire &amp; EMS, Charlotte Fire Department Hazmat teams, Piedmont Natural Gas, and Medic were all assisting at the scene. Emergency personnel rotated crews.<\/p>\n<p>Fire officials said at least two homes have suffered significant damage from the fire.
