DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) \u2014 Police in Durham have arrested a man in a deadly stabbing along the American Tobacco Trail after a dispute over \u201cpanhandling\u201d spots escalated late last month, officials say.<\/p>

The incident was discovered just after 6:30 p.m. on April 27 when a man was found with critical injuries in the 3000 block of Fayetteville Street, according to a Durham Police Department news release.<\/p>\n

Howard Reade Jr., 44, who suffered from stab wounds, was taken to a local hospital where he later died, police said.<\/p>\n

Christopher Cornelius Caldwell, 64, was arrested Thursday in the case and faces a first-degree murder charge, according to an arrest warrant.<\/p>\n

The arrest warrant, which was issued on May 8, did not reveal any details about the incident.<\/p>

In court Thursday, assistant district attorney Kathryn Burgdorf said that a fight escalated over panhandling spots, leading to the stabbing.<\/p>\n

Caldwell is being held without bond in the Durham County Jail. He appeared on a video feed in Durham County District Court on Thursday when he was appointed a public defender.<\/p>
