RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) \u2014 The driver accused of killing a man during a road rage shooting in Wake County last year is facing a federal charge, prosecutors said Wednesday.<\/p>

Josue Alejandro Quintanilla-Reyes was arrested in March 2025 after being accused of fatally shooting Ricardo Baez Cardenas while both were driving on Interstate 40 East near North Harrison Avenue. He was indicted that April on the charge of murder, according to court records.<\/p>\n

According to the Office of the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, Quintanilla-Reyes is a Honduran national who was not in the United States legally when the shooting happened.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, prosecutors said they charged Quintanilla-Reyes with possession of a firearm by an alien illegally and unlawfully present in the United States, a federal offense.<\/p>

Quintanilla-Reyes faces a maximum sentence of 15 years if convicted federally, according to prosecutors.<\/p>\n

Records show Quintanilla-Reyes has remained in custody in the Wake County Detention Center without bond since his arrest.<\/p>\n

According to court records, a jury trial on the murder charge is scheduled to begin in Wake County Superior Court on June 29. A motion filed on June 1 shows Quintanilla-Reyes intends to pursue the defense of self-defense.<\/p>
