(WNCN) \u2014 Communities across the Triangle and central North Carolina are commemorating Juneteenth with festivals, concerts, educational programs and family-friendly celebrations.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/raleighmovingnews.com\/?p=3457\">Arsenal starts Premier League title defense against promoted Coventry<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Juneteenth, observed annually on June 19, marks the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed enslaved people they were free \u2014 more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of the Juneteenth events happening across the region:<\/p>\n<h2>Raleigh<\/h2>\n<h3>Juneteenth: A Chavis Celebration<\/h3>\n<p>John Chavis Memorial Park will host two free Juneteenth celebrations on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The daytime event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and features water activities, arts and crafts, vendor booths, health screenings, food trucks and live entertainment.<\/p>\n<p>The evening celebration is slated for 5 p.m. until 9 p.m., featuring performances by local artists, a live DJ, face painting, inflatables and family-friendly activities.<\/p>\n<h3>Juneteenth Celebration at Moore Square<\/h3>\n<p>Moore Square and Marbles Kids Museum will hold a Juneteenth celebration from noon to 5 p.m. on Friday at Moore Square.<\/p>\n<p>Organized by Taste of Black, the event will include food trucks, games, music and community activities. The outdoor event is free and open to the public, while admission to the Marbles Kids Museum requires a ticket.<\/p>\n<h3>Capital City Juneteenth Celebration<\/h3>\n<p>The Capital City Juneteenth Celebration will take place from 2 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Harvey Hill at Dorothea Dix Park.<\/p>\n<p>The event will feature live entertainment, including HBCU line dancing, performances by the Dynamic Diamonds Dance Team and presentations from genealogist Desi Campbell. Food trucks, vendors and children\u2019s activities are also planned.<\/p>\n<h2>Garner<\/h2>\n<h3>Garner Juneteenth Celebration<\/h3>\n<p>The Garner Juneteenth Committee will host its annual celebration from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Saturday at the Garner Performing Arts Center.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s program focuses on the stories of Black landowners during Garner\u2019s early history and will feature local choirs, dance performances and interviews highlighting the experiences of residents and their descendants. U.S. Rep. Deborah Ross and Mayor Buddy Gupton are scheduled to speak.<\/p>\n<h2>Durham<\/h2>\n<h3>Juneteenth at Hub RTP<\/h3>\n<p>Hub RTP will celebrate Juneteenth with live music, dance performances and community activities.<\/p>\n<p>Entertainment includes DJ Damu, Bey Boys and Acisse Jay and the Gents, along with line-dancing instruction and family-friendly programming. Activities are planned for attendees of all ages.<\/p>\n<h2>Chapel Hill and Carrboro<\/h2>\n<h3>Chapel Hill-Carrboro Juneteenth Celebration<\/h3>\n<p>The towns of Chapel Hill and Carrboro will host a Juneteenth celebration from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday at Hargraves Community Center.<\/p>\n<p>The event features live performances, historical exhibits, local food, art vendors, nonprofit organizations and activities for children. Music, dancing and community programming are planned throughout the evening.<\/p>\n<h2>Cary<\/h2>\n<h3>Juneteenth Celebration<\/h3>\n<p>Downtown Cary Park will hold a Juneteenth celebration from 4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday featuring live performances, food vendors and community activities.<\/p>\n<p>Curated by historian Darrell Stover, the event will highlight the tradition of \u201cfreedom dance\u201d while celebrating Black culture, resilience and community. Brown Community Center.
