CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WJZY) \u2013 Asking about American history can stir up a hornet\u2019s nest, especially if you\u2019re at a particular park in Charlotte.<\/p>

If you\u2019re lucky, a question about the Revolutionary War is an intro to a sweet pack of pooches.<\/p>\n

We found Command Canine training pets in the park with a curious name.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m at the Hornet\u2019s Nest Park,\u201d said dog trainer Nick Hedrick.<\/p>\n

Why is it called that? \u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe the Charlotte\u00a0Hornets?\u201d he figured.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have absolutely no idea,\u201d admits head trainer Maggie Gruner.<\/p>\n

We explored the origin of the city\u2019s identity at Atkins Library on the campus of UNC Charlotte.<\/p>\n

To commemorate America 250, the exhibit\u201cCharlotte: A Hornet\u2019s Nest of Rebellion<\/strong>\u201d delves into something many just take for granted. It will be available to the public until July 6.<\/p>\n

Dawn Schmitz and Andrew Pack are the co-curators.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wanted to highlight the history of the hornet in Charlotte and what it\u2019s meant to people over the years,\u201d Pack told Queen City News.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe question of why Charlotte is called a hornet\u2019s nest and why the hornet and its nest are all over Charlotte-Mecklenburg,\u201d Schmitz says.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe \u2018hornet\u2019s nest\u2019 remark was attributed to General Cornwallis as he was exiting the city,\u201d Schmitz explained. \u201cHe called Charlotte a \u2018hornet\u2019s nest of rebellion,\u2019 based on how hard of a time the British had fighting the war here.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Atkins Library collection includes a book written by British commander Sir Banastre Tarleton.<\/p>\n

\u201c[The Charlotte area was] more hostile to England than any other in America,\u201d Schmitz reads.<\/p>\n

Pack showed us a photo of McIntyre Farm, the site of a skirmish in 1780 called the \u201cBattle of the Bees.\u201d It unfolded when the British tried to loot the place. As if gunfire from Patriots weren\u2019t enough, bees entered the chat.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe British soldiers accidentally turned over a bee\u2019s nest, and so the bees started swarming everywhere, stinging them,\u201d Pack says.<\/p>\n

For two centuries, the Queen City has been abuzz about the\u00a0Hornets\u00a0comparison.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeveral sports teams carry the name of the\u00a0Hornets,\u00a0honoring the Revolutionary War heritage. From 1901 to 1973, there was a minor league baseball team in Charlotte,\u201d said Pack.<\/p>

Then in 1988, the Charlotte Hornets became an NBA team, and after a short stint in New Orleans, once again in 2014.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo many people kind of around Charlotte, they may have seen the symbol somewhere on the sports teams names or on police cars or the county seal, but they have no idea what the origin of it was,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

The display also shows how\u00a0hornets\u00a0were used to make political points.<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring the immigration operations last year<\/strong>, this artwork was distributed widely, and it depicts Queen Charlotte with\u00a0hornets\u00a0buzzing around her,\u201d said Schmitz.<\/p>\n

Of course,\u00a0Hornets\u00a0are known for being territorial and willing to defend their territory<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, who wouldn\u2019t want to be known as a group of people who stand up for themselves,\u201d Schmitz says.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d say it\u2019s a point of pride to show people that Charlotte had an important contribution during the Revolutionary War,\u201d said Pack.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a very strong name,\u201d said Gruner, the dog trainer we began this story with.<\/p>\n

Back at the park, the story of how Hornet\u2019s Nest Park got its name seems to strike a chord.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I love a city that\u2019s got some grit to it and that has its own real identity, so I think that\u2019s awesome,\u201d Gruner says.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a stinging endorsement appreciated by historians and, yes, dog trainers.<\/p>\n

Thankfully, there\u2019s no worry about the chance of a hornet\u2019s nest of rebellious pooches.<\/p>\n

\u201c[The dogs] have no reason to overthrow us; we\u2019re trying to work together, ha,\u201d Gruner said with a laugh.<\/p>
