Duke Energy officials clarify they\u2019ve lowered their initial request for a rate hike from 14.3% to 9.3%. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat happened after our office objected, along with Public Staff, other intervenors, and many North Carolinians,\u201d Jackson said. \u201cIt\u2019s a step in the right direction, but it\u2019s still too high.\u201d <\/p>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Breaking: Duke Energy Carolinas just lowered its proposed residential rate hike from 18% to 11.6%.<\/p>\n<p>That happened after our office objected, along with Public Staff, other intervenors, and many North Carolinians.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a step in the right direction, but it\u2019s still too high.\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Jeff Jackson (@JeffJacksonNC) June 22, 2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>Jackson said his office will continue challenging the proposal before the North Carolina Utilities Commission, arguing that families should not bear unnecessary costs and should not be left paying for infrastructure needed to serve data centers and other large energy users.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll keep making our case for lower rates \u2013 and for making sure families don\u2019t get stuck paying unfair costs for data centers and other large users,\u201d Jackson said.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/raleighmovingnews.com\/?p=3863\">Mamdani and AI industry flex political power in New York, plus more to watch in Tuesday\u2019s primaries<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The company says they are working on how the reductions will translate to reduced bills for residential customers. They plan to have that information in the coming days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the last few months, we have listened carefully to feedback from customers and stakeholders. In response, we have proposed an alternative path that lessens the projected cost impact on customers while continuing to make the investments necessary to serve North Carolina\u2019s growing energy needs,\u201d a Duke Energy spokesperson said. <\/p>\n<p>The North Carolina Utilities Commission will start a hearing on the DEC Rate Case on July 7.<\/p>\n<p>The commission will decide whether to approve, reduce, or reject Duke\u2019s proposed increase.
