DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) \u2014 Mayflies are generating quite a buzz by showing up in large groups on cars, homes and buildings.<\/p>\n

Now it\u2019s led to an insect invasion that Bill\u2019s Truckstop employee Beth Millsaps has never seen before.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cLooking like dragonflies crossed with mosquitos,\u201d Millsaps said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sticking to windows and flying around gas pumps are mayflies.<\/p>\n

\u201cCustomers come running in, swatting at them. They\u2019re aggravating. They cover the lights outside at night,\u201d Millsaps said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Viewers sent us videos of the bugs covering buildings and even their homes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

After Monday night\u2019s storms, some of the insects were washed away at Bill\u2019s Truckstop. Employees like Naveed Baig have been working to sweep them into piles and, unfortunately, they left behind a stench.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, they smell bad. They stink like a poultry farm or a chicken farm. Yeah, they smell bad,\u201d Baig said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to the National Wildlife Federation, Mayflies spend most of their lives in the water as nymphs and then emerge as adults.<\/p>\n

The insects only live for about a day or so and are only active in the warmer months.<\/p>\n

As they continue to cover parts of Davidson County, employees at Bill\u2019s Truckstop shared some advice.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust run. Run in. Run out,\u201d Millsaps said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to the National Wildlife Federation, there are more than 600 species of mayflies in the United States and around 3,000 species worldwide.\u00a0<\/p>\n
