DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) \u2014 Duane Gibson Jr. made his first appearance in Durham County court on Monday, one day after allegedly shooting his own father.<\/p>

The 28-year-old suspect is now charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, and assault with a deadly weapon.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was on the floor when police arrived with a gunshot wound to the chest,\u201d Durham County Assistant District Attorney Kathryn Burgdorf said. \u201cThey were able to apply pressure to help control the bleeding until EMS arrived on scene.\u201d<\/p>\n

Family members of the suspect told\u00a0the judge they fear for their safety if Gibson is released.<\/p>\n

They asked CBS 17 to keep their identities anonymous. One family member said Gibson is suffering from mental health issues with a history of erratic behavior. The family member also said Gibson owns multiple weapons and lives within walking distance.\u00a0<\/p>

Durham police said\u00a0the shooting was reported Sunday morning on Brighton Road in the Hope Valley neighborhood.<\/p>

According to the Durham County District Attorney\u2019s Office, Gibson is also accused of hitting his brother with a baseball bat.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe entered the bedroom and started hitting him approximately five or six times with a baseball bat while yelling,\u201d Burgdorf said. \u201cHe was sleeping and did not understand what he was being yelled at about.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gibson has no prior convictions and a Durham County judge ordered no bond in this case. He\u2019ll be back in court next month, represented by a public defender.<\/p>
