CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WJZY) \u2014 A new rule being discussed by two federal agencies could have guns delivered to your doorstep.<\/p>

\u201cWe\u2019re in the golden age of fraud right now,\u201d says Neal Conner, general manager of Hyatt Gun & Coin Shop. \u201cWe see it, we deal with it on a daily basis.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s part of the concern at Hyatt Coin and Gun Shop. The direct-to-home delivery proposal would roll back a federal law from 1927 banning individuals from mailing concealable firearms.<\/p>\n

The new rule would allow licensed dealers to ship guns through the mail. The buyer still needs to complete a background check, wait a period, and verify their ID. But that\u2019s by a computer and not a federally licensed clerk looking at that customer face-to-face.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have had to ask people to leave before because of intoxication,\u201d added Conner. \u201cI have had to ask people to leave before for threatening behavior. It\u2019s unfortunately something we do see. It\u2019s not the most common thing in the entire world, but it\u2019s something we do see.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn North Carolina, when we stripped away part of our background check system on private sales. We saw a year later, the UNC shooter at Chapel Hill who terrorized an entire community for hours on end,\u201d said Becky Crooker, executive director at North Carolinians Against Gun Violence.<\/p>

Leaders of North Carolinians Against Gun Violence say changing the rule would make gun laws weaker, and will put more people at risk.<\/p>\n

\u201cCertain people should not own guns,\u201d added Crooker. \u201cAnd this is the latest attempt by the gun lobby to circumvent these protections to sell more guns.\u201d<\/p>\n

There are also other issues to sort out. Making sure the person signing for the gun is the same person who bought it, and what if the gun gets delivered to the wrong address. The proposal\u2019s opponents say they\u2019re real scenarios that should be addressed before a change.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s some people who view firearm ownership as being very casual,\u201d said Conner. \u201cAnd it\u2019s not like going to buy a TV set. It\u2019s not like going and buying a scooter or something along those lines. There\u2019s a big responsibility that goes into this.\u201d<\/p>\n

The public feedback portion has been completed, and a decision on the rule is expected in late 2026.<\/p>
