Rows of plastic and wooden chairs faced wall-mounted TV screens as fans flocked into hundreds of thousands of coffee houses and fan-zones across Egypt.<\/p>\n<p>In squares and main thoroughfares, vendors were seen selling Egyptian flags, whistles and fan paraphernalia in preparation for the game.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the day, Egyptian flags were seen fluttering over vehicles and balconies, with debates on television and in public spaces, like coffee houses and markets, centering for days around the national team\u2019s performance and its anticipated game against Argentina.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOverall, the performance was excellent,\u201d said Hassan Shehata, taking his seat in a packed coffee house in Cairo ahead of Tuesday\u2019s game. \u201cWe\u2019re developing. We play and compete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s Egypt\u2019s fourth World Cup during which the most populous Arab country with seven Africa Cup of Nations trophies proved hard to beat.<\/p>\n<p>The 2026 finals saw Egypt\u2019s best-ever performance. A dead silence covered the place when Argentina scored their goals.<\/p>\n<p>The fans were disappointed by Tuesday\u2019s loss but pointed with pride at the team\u2019s historic performance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s injustice,\u201d Haitham Raafat, a 13-year-old boy, burst into tears after the final whistle. \u201cThe referee wasn\u2019t fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi lauded the team\u2019s \u201cunprecedented accomplishment in the history of Egyptian football.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you to the heroes of the national football team,\u201d he wrote in a social media post. \u201cWe are proud of you, and your achievement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shaban Youssef, a 45-year-old mechanical engineer, said he is also proud of the team, saying: \u201cThey held our heads high, especially Hossam Hassan\u2019s support of the Palestinian people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hassan, Egypt\u2019s head coach, used the World Cup platform to show support for the Palestinian people in an impassioned monologue at a pregame news conference.<\/p>\n<p>Asked about his emotions when he draped a Palestinian flag around himself after Egypt\u2019s victory over Australia in the last round, Hassan gave a more than four-minute answer amid applause by the assembled media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there is anyone in the world who does not feel for the Palestinian people, then they are not human \u2014 whether they are Arab, European, or American,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Hassan\u2019s comments were lauded by many Egyptians, who took to social media to express their support for both the coach and the Palestinians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever the result,\u201d prominent novelist Ezzat el-Kamhawi wrote in a Facebook post ahead of Tuesday\u2019s game. \u201cOur team plays tonight, and the championship is already in their pocket, thanks to Hossam Hassan\u2019s goal against Zionism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During Egypt\u2019s World Cup games, hundreds of war-weary Palestinians packed around TV screens in makeshift shelters across the war-torn Gaza Strip to cheer on the Pharaohs.
