Speaking at the NATO summit in Turkey a day after U.S. President Donald Trump again expressed a desire for the U.S. to control Greenland, Denmark\u2019s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said, \u201cGreenland is of course not for sale.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe hope that all, including all allies, will respect the Greenland people right for self-determination,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd we are sovereign states and we need everybody to respect our territorial integrity and our sovereignty.\u201d<\/p>\n

NATO leaders are trying to show increased military capabilities as the U.S. focus shifts from defending Europe. The alliance is holding a two-day summit in Ankara, Turkey, that will showcase military projects worth billions of dollars aimed at persuading Trump they are making a stronger Europe for a stronger NATO.<\/p>\n

Iceland\u2019s Prime Minister Kristrun Frostadottir said Wednesday that Greenland\u2019s people \u201cdo not wish to be a part of the United States\u201d and that NATO allies should focus on the threat from Russia.<\/p>\n

As the summit meetings began Wednesday, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said overnight U.S. strikes on Iran were necessary because Iran had violated the ceasefire.<\/p>\n

Trump met with Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan on Tuesday ahead of the summit and announced the U.S. will lift sanctions, opening the possibility of selling F-35 jets to Turkey over Israel\u2019s objections.<\/p>\n

Trump also criticized NATO\u2019s abilities to function without U.S. leadership and power, expressing disappointment at the refusal of some NATO allies to join the Iran war he launched alongside Israel without consulting them. <\/p>\n

US senator hopes summit will include recommitment to Ukraine<\/h3>\n

U.S. Sen Jeanne Shaheen said she is hopeful the summit will include a recommitment to Ukraine.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe momentum is on the side of Ukraine at this point and we need to do everything possible to ramp up pressure on Russia to come to the table,\u201d the Democrat from New Hampshire said.<\/p>\n

Shaheen is co-chair of the Senate NATO Observer Group.<\/p>\n

Lithuania president offers demining experts for Strait of Hormuz<\/h3>\n

Lithuanian President Gitanas Naus\u0117da said his country was in solidarity with the United States in order to guarantee the free navigation of the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n

Naus\u0117da said the Baltic country was ready to contribute by sending its demining mission if required.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have to stay united if we expect a solidarity from the side of the United States,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Norway prime minister rejects Trump\u2019s Greenland claim<\/h3>\n

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr St\u00f8re, when asked about Trump\u2019s designs on Greenland, said he \u201crejects that kind of rhetoric, that kind of claim.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGreenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark,\u201d he told reporters. \u201cIt is up to the people of Greenland and Denmark to decide how that development should proceed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iceland prime minister voices support for Greenland<\/h3>\n

Iceland\u2019s Prime Minister Kristrun Frostadottir said in remarks Wednesday in Ankara that Greenland\u2019s people \u201cdo not wish to be a part of the United States\u201d and that NATO allies should focus on the threat from Russia.<\/p>\n

\u201cGreenland belongs to the people of Greenland,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we need now is unity. We have threats coming from outside the alliance,\u201d Frostadottir said. \u201cI mean, Russia is the biggest threat when it comes to these NATO allies. We need to focus on us and how we stick together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Danish prime minister vows to defend Greenland<\/h3>\n

Speaking at the NATO summit a day after U.S. President Donald Trump again expressed a desire for the U.S. to control Greenland, Denmark\u2019s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said, \u201cGreenland is of course not for sale.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe hope that all, including all allies, will respect the Greenland people right for self-determination,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd we are sovereign states and we need everybody to respect our territorial integrity and our sovereignty.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said Denmark is \u201cready to defend every inch of NATO including our own territory\u201d in the event of an attack and would rely on NATO allies to honor their commitment to defend each other.<\/p>\n

NATO chief supports US strikes on Iran<\/h3>\n

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said Wednesday at the alliance\u2019s summit in Ankara that the overnight U.S. strikes on Iran were necessary.<\/p>\n

Iran had violated the ceasefire, Rutte said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it is totally crucial that the U.S. forcefully reacts,\u201d Rutte said.<\/p>\n

He expects NATO members to \u201creconfirm that Iran should never, ever get its hands on a nuclear capability\u201d and also to reaffirm the importance of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n
