RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) \u2014 He was an institution at Ravenscroft High School.<\/p>\n

Three years ago, Ned Gonet retired as head football coach of the Ravens after a North Carolina high school record 42 years at one school. Now, he\u2019s doing the same after a record-breaking run of 45 years as Ravenscroft athletic director.<\/p>

\u201c45 years at one place is a long tenure, it\u2019s almost five decades,\u201d Gonet said.<\/p>\n

Gonet coached multiple sports at Ravenscroft, leading his teams to 13 state finals appearances, eight of which resulted in state championships. Gonet won big at Ravenscroft, but it\u2019s not what he\u2019ll remember the most.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, obviously we wanted to win, we wanted to make the marks if we put the time in, but I also felt I had a true responsibility to help those young people develop,\u201d Gonet said.<\/p>

Gonet had plenty of chances to coach elsewhere, both at the high school ranks as well as college, including passing up an opportunity to coach baseball at his alma mater, Duke.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, quite often they\u2019d come back, and some would say, \u2018Listen, you were tough on us, you were disciplined and had expectations, but it\u2019s funny how I\u2019m carrying that on in my life with my kids, with my career and things that I\u2019m doing; you left a foundation.\u2019 Gonet said. \u201cTo me, that was the most important thing to come back.\u201d<\/p>
