(WNCN) \u2014 A concerning intestinal illness has been making its rounds in more than a dozen states, including North Carolina.<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/raleighmovingnews.com\/?p=5509\">UNC police investigating \u2018safety threat\u2019 at Kenan Stadium<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s linked to a parasite called \u201cCyclospora,\u201d found in food and water.\u00a0It causes the illness cyclosporiasis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt happens when you accidentally swallow the parasite and there\u2019s a seasonal pattern associated with it. So, a lot of us in the summertime are eating more fresh fruits and vegetables,\u201d said Candice Christian, NC State Extension Associate with Food Safety.<\/p>\n<p>Christian told CBS 17 that the parasite can be linked to produce like basil, cilantro, parsley, raspberries, and romaine lettuce, to name a few. \u201cThe best defense that you can do at home is to scrub any firm produce. So, if you\u2019ve got melons or cucumbers, you want to scrub those with a vegetable brush, not just rinsing like we usually do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Currently, 145 cases have been reported in North Carolina since May 1. And it makes you pretty miserable,\u201d said Dr. David Weber, UNC Distinguished Professor of Medicine,  Pediatrics and Epidemiology.<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/raleighmovingnews.com\/?p=5507\">France and Morocco meet again at the World Cup, this time in the quarterfinals<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Weber said the illness can be treated with antibiotics and that it can also be particularly tough on children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI worry most about young children who don\u2019t have the capability of keeping up with their fluid amounts. So certainly, a child who\u2019s not quite as responsive as you would like. The skin\u2019s sort of tinting. They\u2019re not drinking enough. They\u2019re not reacting normally. They need to be brought to see their physician or to an emergency department,\u201d Dr. Weber told CBS 17.<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms include watery stool, explosive diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting, or a low-grade fever.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t really get spread from person to person like norovirus.
