(WJZY) \u2014 A new South Carolina law will force restaurant operators to tell customers where they\u2019re getting their shrimp.\u00a0<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/raleighmovingnews.com\/?p=5565\">Scottie Scheffler headed for first missed cut in 4 years<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Legislators say the move will increase transparency and protect the state\u2019s commercial shrimping industry.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u00a0need to be local, which is our coast, not some foreign place,\u201d said one customer outside of Rock Hill\u2019s Pier 51 Seafood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all good,\u201d another customer said.\u00a0\u201cI know it\u2019s the right type of shrimp and it\u2019s put together good. That\u2019s never really bothered me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It matters to the owner of Pier 51, Dimitri Kakouras. He says he values the quality of food he serves and won\u2019t have any problem letting his customers know where his shrimp comes from:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBiloxi down there in Mississippi, that\u2019s where our shrimp comes from,\u201d Kakouras said.\u00a0\u201cWe have Calabash shrimp, green shrimp and jumbo shrimp. And people love them.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fried or broiled\u2014whichever way you like. Shrimp is one of the main dishes at this local seafood spot. They might put different products in them to make them look good. But then once you cook them, they just don\u2019t taste the right way.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The law comes after a seafood consulting company tested shrimp served at local Charleston-based restaurants last year. The study found that <strong>less than 10 percent of them were serving <\/strong>domestic wild-caught shrimp<\/p>\n<p>Food service providers say the transparency brings more opportunity to local shrimpers\u2014and most of all, quality.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cQuality is the number one objective here. Taking care of our customers. Give them the best seafood we can possibly give them. You know, that\u2019s the number one priority here.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Restaurants have until Oct. 28 to comply.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Businesses that fail to comply will first receive a warning and have three days to correct the violation.
