GARNER, N.C. (WNCN) \u2014 A road in Garner will be closed for more than a month as part of the second and final phase of the \u201cComplete 540\u201d project, the North Carolina Department of Transportation said Thursday.<\/p>

East Garner Road between Auburn Knightdale and Rock Quarry Road is scheduled to be closed for about 45 days beginning on or around Monday, July 13.<\/p>\n

During the closure, crews will shift East Garner Road to its new and permanent alignment towards Interstate 540, according to NCDOT.<\/p>\n

NCDOT said the Complete 540 project will extend the Triangle Expressway (Toll N.C. 540) from the I-40\/I-42\/Toll N.C. 540 interchange near Garner and Clayton to the existing I-540\/I-87\/U.S. 64\/U.S. 264 interchange in Knightdale. The goal of the project is to connect the outer 540 loop around the Raleigh area.<\/p>\n

Detours will be in place for eastbound and westbound drivers, according to NCDOT.<\/p>

NCDOT said drivers traveling east will turn left on Auburn Knightdale Road, turn right on Rock Quarry Road, and turn left on East Garner Road. Drivers traveling west will turn right on Rock Quarry Road, turn left on Auburn Knightdale Road, and turn right on East Garner Road.<\/p>

According to NCDOT, the first phase of the project extended the Triangle Expressway about 18 miles from the existing corridor at N.C. 55 to I-40\/U.S. 70. It began in November 2019 and was finished in September 2024.<\/p>\n

The second phase will extend the Triangle Expressway an extra 10 miles from I-40 to the existing I-540\/I-87\/U.S. 64\/U.S. 264 interchange in Knightdale to complete the loop. It began in Spring 2024 and is scheduled to be finished in late 2028, also completing the project, according to NCDOT.<\/p>
