NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 Luke Weaver told Clay Holmes a fib and was proud of it.<\/p>\n

After escaping a bases-loaded, no-outs jam in the New York Mets\u2019 6-3 Subway Series win over the Yankees on Saturday night, Weaver made sure to speak to the teammate who left the previous day\u2019s loss with a broken leg.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I saw him I just was like: `That was in honor of you. I even had your name written in my hat,’\u201d Weaver recalled saying.<\/p>\n

Only, the reliever admitted he invented that extra bit of inspiration.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t, but it just felt right to say,\u201d he told reporters. \u201cKids, don\u2019t lie to your parents.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cClay would probably be disappointed that I wasn\u2019t thinking about him out there on the mound,\u201d Weaver added, \u201cbut the situation obviously presented itself pretty quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n

A night after Holmes broke his right fibula when struck by Spencer Jones\u2019 comebacker, the Mets led 5-2 when the Yankees loaded the bases in the seventh after rookie right fielder Carsen Benge dropped Cody Bellinger\u2019s fly ball, allowing Aaron Judge to score.<\/p>\n

Weaver, who left the Yankees in December for a $22 million, two-year deal with the Mets, sprinted in from the bullpen to relieve Brooks Raley. Weaver concentrated on \u201cnot twisting an ankle or something.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI run in pretty fast. I just think that\u2019s more of an adrenaline spike,\u201d he said. \u201cbut the first few steps always are unpleasant and then the ankles start to loosen up a bit.\u201d<\/p>\n

He struck out Amed Rosario and Trent Grisham on changeups after getting ahead of both 0-2, then got Anthony Volpe to ground into an inning-ending forceout.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was pretty fired up,\u201d Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said.<\/p>\n

Weaver\u2019s fastball averaged 96.1 mph, 1.4 mph above his season average.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think he\u2019s extra fired up. I think that\u2019s who he is. I think that\u2019s what he brings to the table every time,\u201d said Juan Soto, who had a pair of hits and walked twice.<\/p>\n

Weaver went back out for the eighth, his first two-inning outing since May last year. He ended the eighth by retiring Judge on a flyout.<\/p>\n

\u201cA little smirk,\u201d Weaver revealed. \u201cI did say I would acknowledge him at the plate. I didn\u2019t do that a few years ago, and he let me have it. But yeah, it was a cool opportunity to finish that outing against one of the greatest we\u2019ve ever seen and one of best people you\u2019ve ever known.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fans at Citi Field were loud, especially when Judge and Soto batted.<\/p>\n

\u201cI enjoyed every bit of it.\u201d Soto said. \u201cDefinitely, there\u2019s some weird words that they say out there. Most of them, I don\u2019t understand it, but, yeah, it\u2019s really cool.\u201d<\/p>\n

With four wins in five games, the Mets improved to 19-26 but remained last in the NL East.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think tonight I wanted people to know, especially my teammates, that\u2019s what we\u2019re capable of,\u201d Weaver said. \u201cWe could beat great teams in this league and it just takes some fundamental baseball. It takes big moments. It takes some mistakes that we bounce back from.\u201d<\/p>\n

Holmes, who left the Yankees for the Mets after the 2024 season. likely will be sidelined until at least August. Weaver doesn\u2019t feel an obligation to write Holmes\u2019 name in his cap in the future.<\/p>\n

\u201cI certainly will not. That would violate a best friendship that I\u2019m striving for and it would just be a little too much too quick,\u201d he said. \u201cHe seems like a guy that\u2019s got a lot of friends but not a lot of best friends, so that\u2019s always a challenge, trying to just get something you can\u2019t have.\u201d<\/p>\n
