(WNCN) \u2014 The City of Durham is still grappling with who will be the next top cop after Police Chief Patrice Andrews announced her plans to retire six months ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/raleighmovingnews.com\/?p=5904\">Rams left tackle Jackson assigned to pre-filing diversion and can avoid domestic violence charge<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Andrews led the department for more than four years before officially\u00a0stepping down on May 1.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no doubt that choosing a police chief is one of the most important decisions I\u2019m going to make this year,\u201d Durham City Manager Bo Ferguson told CBS 17 in April.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, a city spokesperson said candidate assessments are underway and the\u00a0national search\u00a0remains on schedule. Ferguson hopes to make a decision in late July or early August.<\/p>\n<p>Former DPD Interim Chief Larry Smith told CBS 17 that a lengthy process is not uncommon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an intense process,\u201d Smith, also a former DPD deputy chief, said. \u201cAt least initially, on paper, I think the person they hire as the chief will be a good, qualified candidate.
