MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) \u2014 Myrtle Beach leaders are considering a rule change that would limit capacity to 150 people in future bars and nightclubs along its popular Ocean Boulevard district.<\/p>\n

The city\u2019s planning commission will be the first to address the issue, slated to be discussed on Tuesday at its regular meeting.<\/p>\n

If approved, the amended would create an overlay zone \u201climiting land use of nightclubs, bars and other drinking places with occupancy exceeding 150 persons\u201d while allowing existing licensed properties to continue as non-conforming uses.<\/p>\n

The planning board is being asked to review the text amendment, hold public hearings and make recommendations.<\/p>\n

Mayor Mark Kruea has said that citywide safety enhancements are at the top of his priority list. Ocean Boulevard \u2014 one of Myrtle Beach\u2019s most highly visited areas \u2014 has seen its share of high-profile incidents over the past several years, including an April 2025 mass shooting. <\/p>\n

The city council would have to vote on any zone changes before they can take affect.<\/p>\n
