CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WJZY) \u2014 There\u2019s no question Captain \u201cSully\u201d Sullenberger made an impact in aviation, navigating turbulence in the air, and now, a new headwind against Alzheimer\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Supporters say the lessons of Sully\u2019s courage throughout his life and career will go the distance.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis museum is for everyone; it tells not just a story about aviation, but a story about the purpose of humanity and the potential we all have to work together to solve the most difficult problems,\u201d Sully once told Queen City News about the opening of a new aviation museum named after him.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Sullenberger Aviation Museum attracts visitors every day. They\u2019re either aviation enthusiasts or people who know Captain Sullenberger\u2019s story of landing his U.S. Airways jet in the January 2009 \u201cMiracle on the Hudson.\u201d<\/p>\n

Paul Jay is both. It\u2019s one of the reasons he decided to become a museum member.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe find a person under tremendous pressure who only had a few minutes to make a decision. And it\u2019s just a rallying point of where it all comes together. And he lands on the Hudson. That gives me chill bumps\u2026 that he landed on the Hudson. Everybody lived. People like that, you call them a hero. They\u2019re an inspiration, that\u2019s for sure. A lot of times they don\u2019t want to be, but it is a very inspiring story,\u201d Jay said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sullenberger, an aviation safety advocate, has a new reason to inspire people \u2014 revealing he\u2019s been living with Alzheimer\u2019s<\/strong> for nearly a year.<\/p>\n

In a statement, he writes, \u201cThis new phase of my life has challenged what it means to be of service. And the answer is to speak up.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

People close to him say he\u2019s already leading the charge.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe took an active role in testifying in defense of our passengers and fellow pilots when the two max 737 \u2013 Boeing 737 Max crashes happened, took hundreds of lives because the pilots were not informed about an important system. It\u2019s a tough day to hear about it. But it leads us to a bit of a comforting smile, knowing that there\u2019s somebody out there that not only does things right, but does the right thing,\u201d said Captain Dennis Tajer with the Allied Pilots Association.<\/p>\n
