WILSON, N.C. (WNCN) \u2014 The man accused in the ambush shooting of a woman outside the Wilson County Courthouse before being injured himself in a gunfight with law enforcement earlier this week now faces more charges stemming from the incident, according to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.<\/p>\n

An SBI agent served new arrest warrants Thursday morning on 21-year-old Abdul Karim Fadil Mustafa, charging him with four counts of felony attempted murder and two counts of felony shooting into an occupied vehicle, the SBI said in a Thursday news release.<\/p>\n

The new charges are tied to Mustafa\u2019s alleged actions toward Wilson County sheriff\u2019s deputies and Wilson police officers who responded to Monday\u2019s courthouse shooting, which escalated into a gun battle blocks away, investigators said.<\/p>\n

During the shootout, a Wilson County sheriff\u2019s deputy was struck in his ballistic vest and suffered minor injuries. A Wilson police officer was shot multiple times and underwent surgery. Authorities have said the officer is expected to recover.<\/p>\n

Mustafa was hit by gunfire in the arm during the shootout. He was treated at a hospital before being booked into the Wilson County Detention Center.<\/p>\n

According to the Wilson County Sheriff\u2019s Office, Mustafa is accused of shooting 19-year-old Latoya Andrea Lucas multiple times in an ambush as she walked up the steps of the Wilson County Courthouse around 10:40 a.m. Monday.<\/p>\n

Investigators said Lucas, who remains in critical condition, is the sister of murder suspect Jamel Hines and was headed to Hines\u2019 probable cause hearing when the shooting occurred.<\/p>\n

Authorities believe the courthouse shooting was an act of retaliation connected to the June 23 fatal shooting of 16-year-old Ladarrius \u201cD\u2019baby\u201d Simmons.<\/p>\n

Hines, who turned 18 last week, was arrested June 29 and charged with murder in Simmons\u2019 death. His probable cause hearing had been scheduled for Monday morning, but was canceled following the shooting.<\/p>\n

Court records also show Lucas had been scheduled to appear in court Tuesday on charges related to the June 23 homicide investigation. She is charged with accessory after the fact and obstructing justice after investigators alleged she provided false statements to police.<\/p>\n

In addition to the charges filed by the SBI, Mustafa is also charged with attempted first-degree murder, going armed to the terror of the public, discharging a firearm within city limits, and three counts of injury to real property, according to deputies.<\/p>\n

A judge denied Mustafa\u2019s bond on Tuesday after prosecutors argued he posed a danger to the community. Court records show his next court appearance is scheduled for July 28.<\/p>\n
