After several days of intense heat, rain chances begin to return on Saturday, although much of the day will still be dry. A weak boundary dropping south into central North Carolina will provide a focus for scattered afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. <\/p>

That boundary is expected to stall across the area Saturday night, and with additional lift from an upper-level trough, showers and storms may continue well after sunset. Any storm that develops could produce damaging wind gusts, frequent lightning, and locally heavy rainfall. Despite the increasing storm chances, temperatures will still climb into the upper 90s, with heat index values topping 100\u00b0.<\/p>\n

Sunday looks to be the wetter day of the weekend as deep tropical moisture surges northward into the Carolinas. The added moisture will lead to more numerous showers and thunderstorms throughout the day, making it less likely that everyone stays dry. The increased cloud cover and rainfall will keep temperatures a few degrees lower than Saturday, but it will remain warm and humid. Stronger storms will again be capable of producing damaging wind gusts and torrential downpours.<\/p>\n

An even stronger cold front is expected to sweep through the region during the middle of next week, bringing another round of widespread showers and thunderstorms. Forecast guidance already suggests the potential for a few strong to severe storms along the front, with damaging straight-line winds remaining the primary hazard. Once the front moves through, a noticeable break from the heat is expected. Afternoon highs could drop into the mid to upper 80s for a couple of days, offering the coolest temperatures we\u2019ve seen in quite some time. By the end of the seven-day period, many locations could pick up 2 to 3 inches of much-needed rainfall, providing a welcome boost to soil moisture and helping ease the recent dry conditions.<\/p>
