BOSTON (AP) \u2014 Eighty years ago, a Boston Red Sox team led by future Hall of Famer Ted Williams went on a 15-game winning streak early in the season that still stands as the longest in team history.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday night, the Red Sox can match that mark set by the 1946 club.<\/p>\n

Caleb Durbin hit a tiebreaking homer over the Green Monster with two outs in the eighth inning, and the Red Sox extended the second-longest winning streak in club history to 14 games, beating Baltimore 6-5 on Monday night to snap the Orioles\u2019 season-best win streak at seven.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m trying not to, but I want it,\u201d Durbin said about the possibility of tying the club record. \u201cI can\u2019t speak for anyone else. We really haven\u2019t talked about it, but I want to make history here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Durbin, who had a miserable start to the season after being picked up in an offseason trade with Milwaukee, connected on a 1-0 cutter from Tyler Wells, setting off a celebration by his teammates in front of Boston\u2019s dugout.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt would mean a lot, for sure,\u201d first baseman Willson Contreras said. \u201cWe are trying to play the same way every day. \u2026 If it happens, that would be great for us. We can celebrate that. If it doesn\u2019t happen, you have to keep going.\u201d<\/p>\n

Boston was 37-48 when the streak began and is now in position for a wild-card playoff berth.<\/p>\n

The Red Sox overcame three deficits on Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t imagine it being more electric than tonight,\u201d Durbin said. \u201cIt might be. Tonight was awesome, though.\u201d<\/p>\n

What was he thinking as he rounded the bases, heading toward a handful of players who were jumping up and down in front of the dugout?<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s not a lot of times that you black out \u2014 as they say,\u2019\u2019 he said. \u201cI think that was one of the moments where I didn\u2019t know what was happening. I couldn\u2019t tell you what I looked like running around the bases.\u201d<\/p>\n

Contreras was one of the first players to jump over the railing onto the field after Durbin\u2019s shot. <\/p>\n

\u201cI felt like (the) playoffs, going to the World Series, to be honest,\u201d he said. \u201cHopefully it happens. We\u2019re on the way, but there\u2019s a lot of season left, a lot of games to be played.\u201d<\/p>\n
