(A) You feel younger, and (B) you might feel super old, especially when you meet the Gen Z band director, Connor Settlemyre.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe definitely kind of gets us a little more,\u201d says tuba player Tucker Cameron.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m up here singing the whole time y\u2019all are playing,\u201c he told his group with a smile, preparing them for the Spring Band Concert<\/strong>. The concert is set for Tuesday, May 12, at South Point.<\/p>\n

Settlemyre is 22 and approaching the end of his first year as a teacher. So this Gen X reporter was interested to discover that he was born around the time the TV show \u201cDesperate Housewives\u201d debuted.<\/p>\n

But let him cook, the man can teach.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s important to establish that it\u2019s okay to mess up, okay to make mistakes,\u201d Settlemyre told Queen City News. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to grow from that and improve every day, and if we\u2019re improving every day, we\u2019ll have a good product at the end.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was recently named the Gaston County Schools New Teacher of the Year.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe most fun is getting to make music. We have a lot of fun learning these pieces together and getting through it and everything. It\u2019s special to get a group of 50 kids to do something together.\u201d<\/p>\n

He shares his recognition with the students.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought it was amazing for him,\u201d baritone player Tierney Waters said. \u201cHe definitely deserves it. He really helped us.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cHe\u2019s taught me how to be a better musician, a better drummer. And he\u2019s just a good person overall,\u201d says Jonathan Pegues, a percussionist.<\/p>\n

Mr. Settlemyre is a natural-born teacher, and that\u2019s really no surprise considering music is in his blood.<\/p>\n

His mother, Kelly, is a church minister of music; his uncle Scott has been a band director at universities, including West Virginia and App State; and his brother Josh is a high school choir teacher.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think music was always going to kind of be the way. It was just, what avenue of music,\u201d Connor said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t expecting a 22-year-old guy who likes to joke around with us. We can talk about anything,\u201d says Pegues.<\/p>\n

Yes, he\u2019s youthful and approachable, and not afraid to challenge them musically.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we\u2019re moving at a pretty quick pace, more than a lot of people are comfortable going. But I think you don\u2019t figure it out unless you get a little uncomfortable sometimes,\u201d Settlemyre explains.<\/p>

So the Gen Z-er is well-equipped to make learning a snap. <\/p>\n
