RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) \u2014 The man who helped save Damar Hamlin\u2019s life from sudden cardiac arrest on the football field two years ago is speaking to North Carolina lawmakers about getting more AEDs in schools.<\/p>\n

NFL trainer Denny Kellington, who joined the Carolina Panthers this year, spoke alongside the American Heart Association about the importance of cardiac emergency response plans at schools across the state.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe the last 27 years of practicing CPR \u2014 and being prepared and reviewing our emergency action plans \u2014 helped us that night in Cincinnati,\u201d said Kellington. \u201cThat preparation allowed us to act quickly and efficiently when the cardiac arrest occurred on the field.\u201d<\/p>\n

The group is urging that NC lawmakers incorporate more state dollars into emergency preparedness at charter and public schools. They also encouraged more AED placement, as well as training for the devices and CPR training in schools.<\/p>\n

According to the American Heart Association, more than 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur each year in the United States, and nearly 90 percent of cardiac arrests are fatal.<\/p>\n
