$13.3 million Airport Boulevard project will connect Morrisville areas to I-40, RDU

MORRISVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — North Carolina transportation officials said Thursday that a $13.3 million project is underway to extend Airport Boulevard to connect Morrisville roads near N.C. 54 and Interstate 40.

The first phase of the Airport Boulevard Extension Project will connect a dead-end segment of the road to Town Hall Drive and Church Street, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

Eventually, Airport Boulevard will extend between Garden Square Lane and N.C. 54 (Chapel Hill Road) and link with the current segment that leads to Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

The first segment’s construction should continue through November 2028, according to the NCDOT.

“By completing a missing segment of the Airport Boulevard corridor, the project will provide a direct route between Davis Drive and Chapel Hill Road while improving access to Research Triangle Park, Interstate 40, and Raleigh-Durham International Airport,” an NCDOT project webpage says.

For now, the second phase of the project is unfunded — with no completion date set.

The second part of the project will allow motorists to access Interstate 40 directly along all of Airport Boulevard, possibly shifting traffic off Interstate 540 and Morrisville Carpenter Road.
