FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — United Way of Cumberland County brought together more than 60 businesses, organizations and colleges for a massive meal-packing event aimed at helping families facing food insecurity.

A total of 700 volunteers spent the day packing pasta meals that will be distributed to food pantries across Cumberland County.
United Way Executive Director Scott Embery said the need has grown as funding cuts and delays have affected programs that help people put food on the table.
“Food insecurity this year has probably been bigger than it has been in previous years,” Embery said.
Embery said delays in federal and state funding have created an even greater need for food assistance.

United Way of Cumberland County operates with a team of just five people, but the organization said its goal is ambitious: feed everyone who is hungry.

The meal-packing event shows what can happen when businesses, schools, organizations, and community members work together.
The 70,000 meals will make their way to multiple food pantries across Cumberland County, giving local families another resource when they need help putting dinner on the table.
For United Way, the message is simple: united is the way Cumberland County feeds its neighbors.
