GOLDSTON, N.C. (WNCN) — A Cary man is accused of setting his vehicle on fire after crashing near a propane tank in Chatham County Monday afternoon, the sheriff’s office said.

According to the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 1:30 p.m. to a report of a suspicious person on 300 NC Highway 42 near Goldston.

An investigation determined 42-year-old Matthew Robert Steinle drove his vehicle into a concrete wall protecting a propane tank and set his vehicle on fire by igniting paper he placed in the fuel tank, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies said the vehicle did not explode.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies were able to speak to Steinle and resolve the situation safely.
Steinle is charged with felony possession of an incendiary/explosive device. He is scheduled to make his first appearance in Chatham County court on Sept. 21, according to the sheriff’s office.
