“It’s really heartbreaking,” said Jeff Ricker, a NASCAR fan. “He was an icon of the sport, so many racing wins, future Hall of Famer. Just a tragedy.”

It’s hard for some people to find the words.

“I couldn’t believe it,” said Charles Spritz, whose wife is a big Kyle Busch fan. “I thought it was an AI joke or something.”

Many NASCAR fans camping out ahead of the big race weekend were learning about his death on their phones and radios Thursday evening as Queen City News crews were approaching them.

“Just devastating,” said Tara Gallagher, who is in town from Atlanta. “I loved Kyle Busch. He was great, and I’m really sad for his family.”

Several groups were flying his flag and remembering the racing legend and his accomplishments.

“Love Kyle Busch,” said Chris Hughes, who came from New Hampshire. “Packed my stuff to root for him this weekend, and on the way here, saw the news he was in the hospital. Very upset. Not good news at all.”

While he was a polarizing figure in the sport, these racing fans know his name will live on.

“He’s a legend,” said Hughes. “He’s always been a legend, and I think he’ll live down with the greatest of racers, so I’m hopeful NASCAR will keep his storyline alive the way we do for Dale and Greg Biffle as well.”

Of course, everyone in the campgrounds is most concerned about Kyle’s family, who is asking people to keep them in their thoughts and prayers.
