According to Town of Wendell officials, the new building is more than 6,000 square feet, more than three times the size of the previous building, which was less than 2,000 square feet. It includes an employee breakroom and kitchen with seating for the department and training room with seating for up to 48, both missing from the previous building.
The maintenance shop has gone from about 4,500 square feet to more than 10,000 square feet, featuring specialized bays for large vehicles and other uses, including more storage space, service areas for tires and air, new office space, and access to forklifts, according to town officials.

Officials said there will also be a static lift that can service vehicles up to 14,000 pounds and support routine maintenance, three drive-through bays with moveable lift arms that can service vehicles weighing up to 50,000 pounds such as limb trucks and bucket trucks, a wash and storage bay for the town’s largest equipment, and room for multiple freeze-sensitive vehicles during freezing weather.
According to town officials, the campus has concrete and asphalt surfaces to support full cleaning and stormwater protection and is supported by generator power.

The new public works campus comes as Wendell sees a population growth, with officials expecting to have 29 full-time employees and three part-time employees by 2027.
“This facility represents an investment not only in support of local infrastructure, but in the staff who serve our community every single day,” Wendell Mayor Virginia Gray said in a statement. “As Wendell continues to grow, this new space puts our Public Works team in a wonderful position to grow alongside it, meeting one of our board’s strategic goals to prioritize stewardship of both municipal and natural resources.”
Wendell Public Works Director Brian Bay said in a statement, “The project as a whole signals a massive improvement of our available capabilities and our planning ahead for Wendell’s future. Our new campus gives the Public Works team a modern home where we can work together effectively while maintaining service reliability in any condition. We are very proud to unveil it and put it to work for residents.”
