Granville County fire department receives $389,000 federal grant for new fire truck

OXFORD, N.C. (WNCN) — A fire department in Granville County received a $389,000 federal grant to purchase a new fire truck Tuesday, officials said.

The Total Community Berea Fire Department was presented the $389,000 check for a modern truck at its station in Oxford, according to the United States Department of Agriculture.

According to federal officials, the grant was provided by USDA Rural Development in partnership with Piedmont Electric Membership Corporation through the department’s Rural Economic Development Loan & Grant Program.

Federal officials said the program provides loans, grants, and technical assistance for economic development, infrastructure, and quality-of-life improvements in North Carolina’s rural communities, as well as rural communities across the nation.

“This investment is about making sure rural families and first responders have the tools they need to stay safe,” said Robert Hosford, the Rural Development North Carolina state director, in a statement.

“By partnering with Piedmont Electric Membership Corporation and the Total Community Berea Fire Department, USDA Rural Development is helping provide modern equipment that will strengthen emergency response capabilities and improve quality of life for residents across the community,” he continued in his statement. “Reliable fire protection is essential to supporting economic growth and keeping rural North Carolina strong.”
