A pile of debris and charred vegetation off the 4600 block of Creekview Road in McLeansville marks where a man, who wished to be identified only as Lewi, was involved in a fiery crash on Sunday, March 29.

“I don’t remember the crash at all. I just remember waking up in the hospital with lots of injuries and lots of pain,” Lewi said. “Eight weeks in the hospital. I’m doing a lot better mentally. Physically as well.”

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Lewi was speeding down Creekview Road when he ran off the road, crossed the center line and hit a ditch and then a tree.

Lewi says he woke up in the hospital days later to learn that doctors had amputated his left leg.

“I just accepted it. I don’t know if it was because of all the medication I was on, but I just woke up and I’m happy to be alive,” Lewi said.

Two of the good Samaritans who pulled Lewi out of the fiery crash were Jason Jobe and Joe Fields.

During a welcome home party a few weeks ago, Lewi was able to thank them.

“Thank you for saving my life. They were really cool, and it was pretty cool meeting them too. Just risking their life to save a complete stranger, that’s pretty incredible,” Lewi said.

As he continues his recovery at home, surrounded by family, Lewi says he’s excited to get a taste of normalcy again.

“Keep doing what the doctor told me. Keep going to physical therapy. And honestly, I’m just ready to get back in the gym,” Lewi said.

While Lewi can’t remember the crash or the rescue, he can remember grabbing food on the way home from the gym.
