Monday night, the Charlotte City Council held its budget meeting, where members made adjustments to the city’s $4.5 billion budget plan that included $85 million allocated towards the city’s police and fire departments.

During the hours-long discussion, council members went back and forth on the issue of pay raises for public safety personnel. The city manager’s original budget called for a 10% increase for police and a 7% increase for the fire department.

Some council members argued that firefighters should get the same raises as police. They discussed whether both departments should get a 7% raise, a 10% increase, or somewhere in between.

“I can’t support a position where we are going to reduce the CMPD officers down to seven percent. I am absolutely leaning into the opportunity to get our CFD officers to that ten percent level,” said councilwoman Danté Anderson.

Eventually, the council voted for a 10% raise across the board for both departments. There’s also a 1.89-cent property tax increase, with those funds also going towards public safety.
