Amtrak train crashes into tractor-trailer in east Durham near Pettigrew Street, truck driver injured: Officials

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — Emergency crews are working to clear up a massive crash on Tuesday morning in east Durham.

According to the Durham Police Department, around 9:45 a.m., a tractor-trailer was struck by an Amtrak train near the intersection of East Pettigrew and Grant Street, which turns into Ramseur Street.

Officers said the 18-wheeler stopped on the tracks when the railroad crossing arm came down and was hit by the train.

The truck driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries after being able to exit the 18-wheeler. According to the Durham Fire Department, which is also on scene, the truck driver was taken to a nearby hospital and is currently in stable condition.

“Please exercise caution if you are driving in the area,” fire officials said, who were seen in photos shared by the department hosing down the Amtrak train.

A member of the emergency hazardous materials team told CBS 17 that a substantial amount of fuel spilled as a result of the collision. Our CBS 17 crew saw passengers still onboard the Amtrak train.

Amtrak said there were no injuries on the train to the 235 passengers or crew onboard.

“Amtrak is working with local law enforcement to investigate the incident,” a spokesperson from the communications team said. “As a result of this incident, train 80 is being cancelled and passengers are being transferred to other trains to continue their travel.”

The train was traveling from Charlotte to New York at the time of the crash.
