DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – On Monday, a free gun lock giveaway was put on in front of the Durham County Courthouse.

The giveaway was sponsored by both Durham County’s Department of Public Health and District Attorney’s Office.
The giveaway was as part of NC S.A.F.E. (Securing All Firearms Effectively) Week of Action, which is a statewide initiative to raise awareness of the importance of securely storing firearms.

“Anytime there’s an unsecured gun, it’s a problem, said Durham County District Attorney Satana Deberry. “If you keep your gun in the car, which number one you should not do, the car is not a gun safe. But if you do keep your gun in the car and it gets stolen, a locked gun is a gun that can’t be used in street violence.”
The Durham County Department of Public Health is also offering free gun locks available for pickup from Monday through Friday at their address on 414 East Main Street. Contact Donna Rosser at [email protected] to learn more or schedule a pickup.
