RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – On Monday, 25 Wake County law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty were honored at a memorial ceremony at Hayes Barton Baptist Church.

During the ceremony, multiple speakers talked about the impact their deaths have had on the Wake County community, including Attorney General Jeff Jackson and Raleigh Police Chief Rico Boyce.

The ceremony helped open up National Police Week, which lasts from May 10 through May 16.

Several City of Raleigh facilities and downtown buildings will be lit in blue during National Police Week to honor all fallen officers.
The first proclamation for Peace Officers Memorial Day and National Police Week was issued in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy to remember and honor law enforcement officers for their service and sacrifices.
