The incident, which began around 11:55 a.m, was centered near Morningwood Drive and Pleasant Plains Road, where authorities closed roads and urged drivers to avoid the area.

According to Matthews Fire & EMS, the fire involved an 8-inch natural gas pipe.

Officials said Piedmont Natural Gas crews worked to shut off the flow by attempting to “pinch the pipe” as firefighters remained at the scene battling the blaze.

Nearly 50 homes along Morningwood lost power when it was shut off, but it was restored on Wednesday evening.

Large emergency response

At least 100 firefighters responded to the incident. Crews from Matthews Fire & EMS, Charlotte Fire Department Hazmat teams, Piedmont Natural Gas, and Medic were all assisting at the scene. Emergency personnel rotated crews.

Fire officials said at least two homes have suffered significant damage from the fire. No injuries were reported, and Medic personnel remained at the scene as a precaution.

Officials told Queen City News that they suspect electrical crews who were installing poles at the scene reportedly struck the 8-inch pipe, leading to the leak.
